CHIVOR · LAND OF EMERALDS

Nature and
mining history.

Before it was called Chivor, Spanish chroniclers knew these mountains as Somondoco. The first emeralds from the Americas to reach Europe came from here, and their story is intertwined with the people who lived here, worked the mine and found it again.

  1. Before 1537

    A treasure known since ancient times

    The Indigenous peoples of the region already mined and traded these green stones. Through barter, emeralds from these mountains reached the Aztecs in Mexico and the Incas in the south.

  2. 1537

    The arrival of the conquistadors

    Following Indigenous accounts, Captain Pedro Fernández de Valenzuela, of Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada's expedition, reached the mines of Somondoco. From the heights he saw the Eastern Plains through a gap in the mountains, a detail that would prove key centuries later.

  3. 16th and 17th centuries

    The first emerald mine in the Americas

    Chivor was the first emerald mine worked by Europeans on the continent and the first to supply Europe. Its operation, based on the forced labor of Indigenous people, led to protective decrees that were barely enforced, until the Crown ordered it closed in the late 17th century.

  4. Two centuries of silence

    The mountain covered it again

    Abandoned, the mine vanished under mist and vegetation, and its exact location was lost.

  5. Late 19th century

    The rediscovery

    Engineer Francisco Restrepo studied the old chronicles and, guided by that clue (the only spot from which the Plains could be seen), found the lost mine again.

  6. 20th century

    Adventurers of the “green fire”

    In the 1920s, miner Justo Daza found the 632-carat Patricia emerald, now at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. Peter Rainier, the mine's manager, told his adventures in the book Green Fire, made into a 1954 film starring Grace Kelly.

A mountain to explore

Chivor overlooks the Sinaí valley and the Guavio canyon, where the Rucio and Sinaí rivers meet. Above the valley rises El Púlpito, the rock that marked the mine's location for centuries. Among waterfalls, bromeliad forests and trees that bloom in red, you can still look out toward the Plains just as the first explorers did.

Colombian emeralds are unique: they form in sedimentary rock from very hot, salty waters that leave iron out, giving them an intense green with a touch of blue, the hallmark of Chivor's stones.
